If you no longer want to use StudyStream, you have two options — and you can do both yourself in the app. They're different, so please choose the one that fits you:
- Deactivate (temporary) — pauses your account. Your data is kept and you can come back anytime.
- Delete (permanent) — permanently wipes your account and data. This cannot be undone.
You'll find both options in your account settings. The exact steps differ slightly between the web and mobile apps — follow the set that matches your device below.
Deactivate your account (temporary)
Deactivating your account disables your access to StudyStream, makes your profile inaccessible to others, and removes your name and photo from public lists. Your data is kept, so you can reactivate later.
On the web
If you're using the web app in a browser:
- Click your profile picture (top-right) → Account settings.
- Scroll to the bottom to "Deactivate your account".
- Click "I want to deactivate my account" and confirm.
On the mobile app (iOS & Android)
If you're using the StudyStream mobile app on your phone:
- Tap your profile picture (top-left) → Settings.
- Under "Account", tap "Manage account".
- Under "Deactivate your account", tap "Deactivate" and confirm.
To come back, simply log in again — your account and data will be restored.
Heads up: deactivating doesn't pause your streak — days away count as missed days (your streak freezes get used up, then the streak resets).
Delete your account (permanent)
Deleting your account wipes all of your personal data from our systems. You'll lose your account history, and other users won't be able to find or contact you. If you have an active subscription, cancel its renewal first — deletion is blocked while auto-renewal is on, and deleting your account does not undo a renewal that has already been charged. Messages you've previously sent become read-only, and any video stats you accumulated become anonymous (except for Zoom data from before 1 March 2022, or thereafter if you connected your Zoom account). This action is irreversible.
On the web
If you're using the web app in a browser:
- Click your profile picture (top-right) → Account settings.
- Scroll to the bottom to "Delete your account".
- Click "I want to delete my account" and confirm.
On the mobile app (iOS & Android)
If you're using the StudyStream mobile app on your phone:
- Tap your profile picture (top-left) → Settings.
- Under "Account", tap "Manage account".
- Under "Delete your account", tap "Delete" and confirm.
Not sure which one to choose?
- Choose Deactivate if you might return — everything is saved and you can reactivate by logging back in.
- Choose Delete only if you want your data permanently removed. It cannot be reversed, and your account, streak, stats, and history cannot be recovered.
Can I get my account back?
- Deactivated accounts: yes — just log back in.
- Deleted accounts: no. Deletion is permanent and your data cannot be restored.
You're welcome to sign up again with the same email address after deleting. If registration shows "you might have already registered", an account with that email still exists — try logging in or resetting the password instead. If deletion failed with an error, start a chat with us at app.studystream.live or in the StudyStream app (no login needed).
